One of the most effective methods to counter a potential fall are static line systems (also known as a static safety line system). Allowing for a great solution to fall arrest situations where a worker may already be in the motion of falling.

By providing continuous contact to the structure; workers are able to use static lines in conjunction with other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as harnesses and lanyards.

How static lines work

Static lines work by being installed across the working area or close to potential hazards workers or operators may need to access.

By connecting their harness to the static line system using a lanyard; there is a permanent connection between the worker and the structure. This allows for the worker to have use of all their limbs to complete the particular task they’re working at height for.

The main purpose for using a static line system is for fall prevention – specifically fall arrest. When an operator begins to fall; the static line system will ‘catch’ the user before they make impact on the lower level or ground below. This not only stops potentially fatal injuries occurring to the operator; but damage to the lower structure as well.

Key Features and Benefits to look for in static line equipment

Able to be mounted on a wide range of surfaces.

Some work sites and buildings can be constructed from different and varying materials. Examples of this are wood, concrete and steel.
By having a static line system constructed out of materials which can be installed on these different compounds; it’s not a barrier when a work site contains two or more different building materials within the basic structure.

Suitable for lightweight structures.

Moving on from being able to be installed on varying materials; there are also highly rated static line solutions on the market that allow for easy installation on lightweight structures as well. If this wasn’t an option; then it would limit some buildings and worksites ability to provide the best possible height safety strategy.

Able to absorb the kinetic energy that’s generated during a fall.

As mentioned previously; static line systems should have the ability to absorb the extra energy expelled during a fall. By not being able to absorb the energy then this has the potential to place extra force on the operator during the fall; and on the structure by potentially ripping the installed safety equipment from the structure.

Weather resistant materials.

By making sure that the static line system is constructed from weather resistant materials; this ensures their durability and means they can be used in all-weather scenarios that may occur.

Allows for multiple users to be connected simultaneously.

It’s very rare that a single person will be required to work on a roof at any point in time. This is why it’s important to have a static line system that allows for multiple users to be connected at once.
